Hi, Rob-

You're right of course, you can't have everything. I wasn't thinking of "cheap / easy / etc." in the absolute sense, but rather within the overall parameters of home-built kayaks in the first place. That is, I can buy a plastic boat from my local outdoor store for about $1,000 and it seems like it'd be a nice, solid boat - so any home-built project needs to be measured against that.

My impression is that S&G is relatively easy to build and looks decent, but there's some compromises made to in-the-water design due to the construction method. The strip method seems somewhat-to-significantly harder to build, but results in a boat that not only looks amazing, but seems much closer to the designer's ideal in-the-water lines.

The question I've been kicking around in my head is what if you wanted the shape of the strip boat, but didn't necessarily require the look of a "wooden boat?" That's where this notion of using foam came in.
