Rob - thanks for the thoughtful reply. I think your observation about the need to assess goals is spot-on.

I certainly didn't come here with any expectation that I have some "new" or "better" idea - to the contrary, I assumed people had explored this or a similar concept, and either determined that it didn't work at all, or that it didn't offer any advantage given their goals. So my question wasn't whether I had a better answer to "the problem," but rather if I'm potentially asking about a different problem than the ones the most popular solutions are intended to address - if I might have different goals.

I took a look at your web site - truly beautiful boats, btw. Per your comments about creating a fair hull, I'm thinking I had a mistaken assumption - it appears that the strip method is primarily about function, and the beauty is mostly a side-effect. So trying to replace strips with panels might enable the process to go faster, but not only wouldn't look as nice, I expect it wouldn't perform as well either (it wouldn't conform to the desired shape during production, and wouldn't provide the same durability in the water). So - why bother?

Also, regarding cost, I'm realizing that one of the major drivers of cost here is the epoxy - the SoF design is cheaper because it doesn't require the same materials. (of course it also produces a result optimized for different goals)

I appreciate all the feedback on this topic.
