Steve,

The wood in a strip boat is not unneeded.
Its an integral part of the strength.

We've referred to a "sandwich" core construction above.
Fiberglass is strong and stiff (along the path of the glass) but by itself, it is very flexible (side to side).
A single skin boat (of the same thickness as glass on a strip planked glass) has so little stiffness thru the skin thickness that it will sag out of shape just under its own weight, and if you picked it up from one end might bend enough to fail (buckle) cracking the skin.

Using either foam or wood as the "core" or insides of a glass / core/ glass sandwich provides the stiffness to survive the sideways bending.

You can make the core thinner up until the point where it fails under normal usage. That saves weight, but it doesn't help much if its busted the first time you take it out.

Rob Macks has it right. You need to get your hands on some material and try.

You might try something I've done - build just the first 4' of a boat. That way you can try things out on a small scale and learn 90% of the lessons needed for the full boat.

Nick has two books which have the dimensions for the boats.
Just make the forms for the first 4'.
This is small enough you can do it on a table top.
If you try strip planked, it will only take about one 2x4 of lumber, plus particle board for the forms.
