Thanks for the comment. I am a Great Lakes paddler- most frequently western Lake Erie, where it is shallow and waves come up quickly and are steeper and closer together than Lakes Michigan or Huron. I'm finally going to put a skeg in my kayak this winter. Since the waves are steep I've been leaning toward close to the cockpit to be sure that it's in the water when you want it to track- but the conventional wisdom is all over the place, if you don't mind me saying... Do you have experience with the skeg toward the middle (18"-20" behind the cockpit) in steep, close waves? When I say close, I mean close. The interval is often less than 2 seconds, so the bow is constantly shooting down into the trough and catching the wave in front. Luckily you don't catch these conditions every trip out, or I wouldn't have paddled this kayak 8 years without a skeg...
