skeg history

A lot of early sea kayaks had a bit more tracking with no real need for a skeg.

Valley Canoe (kayaks) years back came up with a model that was a copy of an early Greenland hull. Anas Acuta. Not bad. Hard chine and people could paddle it without too much fuss. Then they took the hull, rounded it out to a soft chine boat and that was the Pintail. Well liked except a monster to paddle in some conditions. Dealers were getting constant returns by customers - hence the birth of the drop down skeg on all their kayaks. The kayak world followed and with rudders as well too.
The position was conveniently put where it would not impede storage yet accessible for repairs.

My brother has a Pintail and loves it. But.... if that skeg hangs up, forget it. Its very skeg dependent.
