It is true. If you go to YouTube he posted a bunch of videos too. None of them were my conditions, though. It's one thing to show how a skeel can correct something on flat water, and another to see if somebody has actually used it in those conditions. Designers are usually happy with their designs, but they're designed to solve a problem that they encounter, which is not what I would necessarily see.

It's true that we don't often see 'freshwater' waves (short and choppy) on the west coast,but there are plenty of 'chaotic' conditions available in tide rips/races where on the right (wrong?) day there can be confused waves on top of swell and standing waves.
Reg has paddled it all, I think. The Sterling kayaks (which are very much the 'in thing' in BC and the PNW, for those who can afford them) mostly have the 'skeel' with the skeg box starting right behind the bulkhead (behind the seat).
I have a skeel in the same location on my Frej and it works well, but that mAy be because it's a well-designed boat without a lot of 'bad habits' anyway.
