OK I'll just ask - I searched the FAQ, but didn't find exactly what I was looking for. So, the options are pretty overwhelming - I at least need some tools to narrow it down. Based on careful research and some highly scientific coin-flipping, the Redfish Spring Run seems like a decent choice, but I'm not sure. Any and all advice welcome.
I'm considering this based on three factors: 1) the suitability of the finished boat for my build and experience level. I'm 6'1, close to 200 pounds, size 11 shoe. I've paddled recreationally off-and-on for years, but would like to advance my skill level and learn how to roll, etc., and I want an outdoor activity to help get me off the couch and be more active. I live in CT, so I'd be using the boat in the Long Island Sound - probably some open water, definitely inlets/bays and rivers (not whitewater). I'd like the ability to join local groups on overnights, but realistically I'll probably be going out for a couple hours not a couple days.
2) suitability of the plans for a first-time boatbuilder with some woodworking experience. I have a table saw and portable power tools, but no planer or drill press. I'm also fortunate to have a basement with a door to the garage, so I have a place to work.
3) the coolness factor. I love boats - to me, even the ugliest boat in the world is still cool simply because it's a boat. But that said - sometimes they just grab you. I'm entranced by Rob's baidarkas, even though a Mystic Star probably doesn't make sense for me given items 1 and 2 (but I'm open to being persuaded). In looking at photos, though, it's hard for me to distinguish inherent beauty from craftsmanship. I have to consider what it'll look like once I get done with it :-)
I realize much of the above is subjective - but not all of it. Any guidance would be appreciated.
