OK I just can't help myself sometimes.

What would happen if, instead of using a single form to first build a hull and then build a deck, you cut the forms in half vertically and built the kayak as two "half-shells?" The join would be a stem / keelson/ whatever you call the stern version of a stem in the hull, and I guess you'd need a strip down the deck (but maybe not).

The primary advantage would be that since you're work is horizontal, you could use gravity to assist in clamping - e.g., sandbags or whatnot to hold strips in place. Further, it might be easier to handle the hull to deck transition at the sheer line (you'd have more access, for one thing - the "join" areas would be flatter and easier to get to).

One disadvantage is it might be harder to keep the strips "balanced" this way - that is, lining up nicely. Also, now you're making two strongbacks not one.

Another thought is if you did do half-hulls like this, that there might be some way to build the forms in such a way that they'd provide a "nailer" that would let you staple the strips from the inside, so the holes don't show.

I know, I know, too much theorizing, just start cutting some wood...
