When you think about sources of wood, you can certainly work from some of the local lumber yards, big box or otherwise, in Fairfield County and pick your way through their stock to find suitable material. If you want to find a much wider selection of materials and high quality, White Plains, New York is closer than Madison, so check out ML Condon.

There are also suppliers that will sell precut strips, but this is an expensive way to go--better to rip them yourself if you can.

While the season is drawing to a close, you may find people in Connecticut (either through this board or the ConnYak.org board) who might be willing to let you paddle a boat. It sounds like you want a relatively lower volume boat (for rolling and mostly day paddles on rivers and the Sound) you might like one of Nick's Guillemot boats, like a Petrel, or Jay Babina's Outer Island, or one of Bjorn Thomassen's designs. Lots of choices.
