IMHO much of this discussion falls under the category of "tweeking". The first kayak I built was a Guillemot L, it wasn't comfortable for me, the tracking was terrible, it was slow, and it was heavy. I then built a North Star which is much faster and lighter, looks magnificent, but I could not roll it, it wasn't comfortable, and it ran on rails and just will not turn. then I built two boats for racing and learned a lot about comfort, but they are racing boats and camping and bird photography is out of the question.

My most recent build was another Guillemot L. It is much lighter, has a retractable skeg, I can roll it with ease, and it has lots of room for camping gear and has the stability for birding photography. I gave the forward bulkhead a 20 incline and it is Far more comfortable than anything I have built in the past. It has no compass mount. I use a Garmin MAP 78, that I carry in the chest pocket of my PFD.
