Comment on compass placement: I may be wrong, but I believe the reason expedition kayaks placed the compass out front is so you can glance at it without taking your eyes far from the horizon in seas. Looking down at your foredeck may bring on seasickness in some. That said, it is getting harder to see it way out there. Fwiw.
