Tools: Staples:Not what they once were....

I started building strip boats (canoes) in the 80s, and I've always used T-50 staples to hold the strips to the forms.
Over the years I thought I'd figured out good methods to drive and remove the staples, so I was surprised on my latest build to find that many staples were breaking when I tried to pull them out. Removing broken 'legs' of snapped staples gets tedious in a hurry.
I hadn't changed my mold material or methods, so I was puzzled.
I had bought some new (Arrow) staples, having finally used the last of an old box.
Today I thought to measure the new staples against some old Arrow staples (different lengths, but same vintage as the ones I'd used on my previous builds).
Thickness of metal in new Arrow staples: 0.49 mm
Thickness of metal in older Arrow staples: 0.60 mm
New staples: 'Designed and assembled in USA' (assembled=packaged? actually manufactured in ???)
Old Staples: 'Made in Canada'

Apparently, it makes a difference.

If you have a few minutes and a micrometer, I'd appreciate some extra data points on this. I did measure samples from a few different boxes, but I don't have a good selection of brands here. With 'modern' retailing, every store seems to offer the same brand selection, so alternatives may be hard to find. I will be looking.
