I agree with you on that point, but I still believe that the average recreational paddler on flat water will often notice that a 13' kayak is slower than a 15' kayak.

I agree (in general) since most of the shorter kayaks on the market aren't designed to be quick at all. The Mariner Coaster is pretty much in a class of its own.
My 16' Frej is a quick boat (for me - 160#) and I can keep up (on most days!) with a fitter friend in a 19' Seda Glider. Once the conditions get rough/windy, I can paddle away from him.

Putting a less-powerful paddler into an 18+ foot'Expedition' boat or even a 16 foot boat like an Arluk IV (16' x 24") is a recipe for misery, IMO.
Here are some comments from a woman who bought a 16' Mariner Elan (16' x 21.5", designed for lighter paddlers) from me last summer:

I recently purchased a refurbished Mariner Elan and had it out for the first time yesterday. It wasn't a long paddle but fortunately we had some challenging wind conditions on the return trip so I was able to see how it paddled in weather that I had found very challenging with my former boat, an Arluk IV. It was fantastic! I only had to do a few correcting strokes but my husband had a very difficult paddle back and was pretty stressed by the time we landed. In the past he would have had a much easier time in those conditions than me ... it was really nice to have things reversed for a change.

Her husband paddles a longer Current Designs boat. This lady has since told me that she can finally paddle at the same (or faster) speed as her companions.
It's all about matching the boat to the paddler, and working with great designs!
