The 'hard spot' issue is more of a concern with a very flexible bull and deck - which you can find in lightly-built glass boats.

It seems like since the bulkhead is perpendicular to the strips that the stresses might be distributed more evenly as well, but I'm not sure.

The basic idea is that if the cockpit area gets filled with water, the kayak will still float (and can often be paddled) since the ends of the boat are still 'dry' and provide flotation.

Do people add foam for positive flotation? Why "float bags" instead, because they can be removed? After some quick Googling I found a marine supplier that sells two-part expanding urethane for flotation use. A 2-quart package costs $26, and should produce about 2 cubic feet of foam, which would provide over 150 pounds of buoyancy. Could you pour that into the ends, where you probably don't want to put heavy cargo anyway?
