I am definitely going to install bulkheads. I'm just a fan of positive buoyancy - I had it in my 21' sailboat, and knowing that I did was very comforting that time I found myself floating in the Hudson River, hanging on to a safety line as the cockpit filled with water after being knocked down in a sudden summer storm.

Given how light the kayak is and what it's made of, doesn't seem like it'd take a whole lot of foam to ensure positive buoyancy.

Some racing dinghies use air bags strapped under the side decks for flotation, IIRC.
A sealed compartment filled with air (e.g. a bulkheaded kayak compartment with a good hatch cover) is about the most efficient flotation possible. Without a bulkhead, a good air bag filling the space will do the job, but is a lot more trouble (to keep properly inflated and clean) and not as effective (because there's still space for some water in the compartment).

If you can get some rescue practice with competent instructors and decent commercial boats, you'll probably get some good ideas on how to outfit your Mystic Star. The systems are pretty well worked out. There are some regional differences (prejudices?) but you could paddle anywhere- N. America, Europe, Oz/NZ and find the same routines used in rescues.
