Do people add foam for positive flotation?

I get the foam question fairly frequently. I guess people think you need foam to float, but what you really want is air. Foam is just a bunch of really tiny air bags. But the thing about foam is it is heavy, when compared to air. Now if you have one big airbag, that is mostly air, it will weight a lot less.

You will find foam specifically designed for providing floatation, but even that is just a glorified sponge. As time goes by, even the best 2-part foam will start to absorb a bit of water, and it will trap water into inaccessible spots. That leads to more weight, and a slew of other potential problems.

And yes, you can remove a float bag, but I generally leave float bags in place.
