In the 70's and 80's I helped dig out 2 part foam from boats that had gotten unrealistically heavy. The "skin" of the foam had been damaged and water was just sucked up and held in the foam.

As time goes by, even the best 2-part foam will start to absorb a bit of water, and it will trap water into inaccessible spots. That leads to more weight, and a slew of other potential problems.

Fortunately I learned this lesson with a canoe - where I could dig the foam out of the 'end chambers' - rather than a kayak, where it would be a very difficult job.
