The accident you mention on your web page illustrates the problem.

I guess you missed the comment "Then after the fact I took the time to build Rob Mack's feathering system he had in an illustration. Had I done this in the first place I would still have a thumb print."

One of the tablesaw 'safety rules' I do follow (100%) is to never put my hand 'past the blade' - i.e. never reach over or around the blade, where a kickback (or inattention) could pull my hand into danger.

Yes, that is the furniture/woodworker's rule and a good one. I agree. I have worked in a number of professional woodworking shops and would never reach past the blade.

However, as a wood strip building master using a featherboard on top of the blade, I respectfully disagree.

Rules are good where they apply.

The full fence, riving knife and correctly adjusted featherboard hold the strip from moving into the blade causing "kickback".

Unfortunately, one rule I never heard was, "Don't use a saw without a riving knife".

EVERY saw I've seen in professional and home shops have all safety devices removed. They were designed to be removed.

The guards and knives on new saws have finally caught up with older mandatory European standards and are well designed and easy to use.
