The blade is buried in the featherboard. The only way to cut yourself is to run your hand UNDER the featherboard.

Hi, Rob- I'm certainly not going to argue with you. BTW to be clear, I didn't ask him for a critique of anybody's specific method, I asked in general about his recommendation, as a very experienced woodworker, for the safest way to rip thin strips. In particular, i wanted to know if he preferred the "normal" method where the strip runs along the fence, or if he liked that alternative jig that runs the waste along the fence, but requires that you move the fence each time.

What he recommended is essentially what you recommend as well. I had mentioned "featherboards," and his response was to use push-sticks instead. It could be he meant "push-sticks instead of a fixed hold-down," and wasn't even considering it in terms of a blade guard. Alternatively, he might be concerned that if any accessory is installed improperly, it could lead to jams and, just as in your example from John, actually create the sort of situation under which one is tempted to put one's fingers where they don't belong in the first place.

I do see the benefit of installing a sacrificial blade guard to replace the plastic one that doesn't fit when the rip fence is that close, though, so I'll ask him about it.
