I was in Detroit this week so had the opportunity to stop by my cousin's woodshop, and he showed me how he'd set up his table saw for cutting strips. I'd previously said he'd recommended against featherboards - but turns out that's not entirely accurate. So my intent here is just to report this clarification - I asked him so I could understand not just what to do, but why.
It turns out when I'd asked about "featherboards" he'd said no need because he uses those specifically to hold stock down or against the fence - the feathers enable it to apply a bit of pressure to the stock without binding. Here, though, it's a through-cut so no concern for a specific depth, therefore he saw no need to actually "hold it down" against the table with pressure, but he did use a board to act as a "guide" without pressure - therefore, he didn't feather it.
What he did, was clamp on a thing he'd made for a previous job, consisting of a roughly 18" piece of hardboard with a chunk of plywood attached. He adjusted the hardboard so it'd fit between the blade and the fence, lightly touching the stock, and the plywood was at the front of the blade to act as a guard. So it performs exactly the role that Rob's featherboard setup does.
