Here's one with pine an cedar. I have always used pine for accents and it's held it's contrast fine.

I think the only way to actually make this selection will be to actually put some strips together, sand them down, put some finish on it, and see how it looks. I don't have a good sense of how dark my RWC is going to be yet - but figured I'd narrow down some candidates first so I can do a comprehensive test board.

Nice thing about poplar and pine is they're readily available and cheap! Not too hard to get my hands on maple and oak either, but not sure if they offer any particular advantage color-wise and are probably harder to bend, right?

I assume that sanding and varnishing my test panel won't yield exactly the same color as fiberglass and epoxy - but in your experience will it be sufficient to evaluate contrast?
