I hope this is a water based stain as oil based could cause problems with epoxy adhesion.

I use an aniline dye like TransTint which is thinned with water and applied with a brush.

Stains have solids which can make wood have a muddy look. Dyes are transparent allowing the grain to show more strongly.

If your stain was an oil based one I'd do a test panel. Stain it, then glass it.

Cut hatch marks on the surface and see how easy you can pull off glass. With wood is good.

If it is not good sand off the stain and try dye.

It's easier just to do it than to think about. I dyed a kayak hull red. Bad idea! The next day I sanded it all off.
