I think when you say kerfing you mean scarfing?
A scarf would be generally cut at a 6/1 ratio to get good strength.

However, I just make a butt joint on the forms and it works well.
I do make the joints between each form so there will not be a sharp joint created by putting the butt joint on a form.
I also use some scrap strip (covered with packing tape) to clamp on each side of the joint. The scraps force the joint to be fair and if you overlap the scrap over the previous row of installed strip, it also insures the joint is fair vertically.

If you are going to scarf, then make the scarfs before you cut the strips. This makes better scarf joints and wastes less wood.
