Generally wood isn't free, so less waste equals less cost.

Which 'direction' do you scarf?
Folks who do individual strips - scarfing them separately - seem to be running the scarf 'from the inside of the boat to the outside', so that the visible join line runs perpendicular to the length of the strip.
I don't understand how you can do this type of scarf on the board before ripping without a lot of waste. (I'm probably being dense here...)
To scarf whole 6" boards, I'd be making a diagonal cut 36" long on the end of each board - that seems like waste material to me.
On the one occasion when I scarfed 'in the board' I cut the bevel on the squared ends of the boards. This produced strips with the diagonal scarf line visible on the outside of the boat, which wouldn't appeal to some builders.
