I have to disagree about the "nothing like the real thing".

Some of the first attempts I've seen are so bad I didn't want to stand next to them.

Rob's right - do some practice first - then start for real.

Gaps get pretty visible. patch them with slivers of wood glued in place.
Don't use commercial filler putty if you can help it.
I tried 15 tubes of different kinds before I found what I liked, even then some colors did not retain the tint when the epoxy hit them.
They showed up very badly. Disappointing.
