Sorry to keep being a know it all.

Not at all - the reason I'm posting here is to get the benefit of your collective experience. I appreciate your taking the time to provide advice.

But ---- Clamps are really not a good thing.
I kept clamping to close gaps until I noticed that after several rows of strips, the last strip was no longer straight.

Gotcha. Yeah, I'm not talking about using clamps to force the strips into place - just using bar clamps to apply the "normal" sort of clamping pressure that you need across the glue joint for a good bond. I neglected to do that the first time around.

I'm trying to get the right bend and twist in there so that the spring clamps are just holding things in place and maintaining alignment while the glue dries - not forcing anything. Although that said, I've noticed that while using the heat gun to bake in the correct amount of twist is very important, it seems to work well to leave room for a little bit of bend - that a little bit of tension helps ensure a fair curve.

That's why I finally took Uncle Nick's advise and use masking tape to hold the strips in place. If that is not enough to close up gaps your fit is not good enough.

I understand that if the strips fit correctly then masking tape should be able to hold them in place with no gaps - but don't you still need to clamp across the glue joint for a good bond?
