There's not much point in arguing about techniques IMO. Some folks like to 'research extensively' ; others prefer to learn 'as they go'. It's a personality/learning styles thing.

I have to say I don't really understand why it feels like we're "arguing" when in fact I think everyone is substantially in agreement on all of the important points. I feel like I'm hardly exaggerating to suggest that if I posted "Western red cedar is a suitable wood for kayaks" the response would be "You're wrong! The only suitable wood for kayaks is western red cedar!"

I think everyone agrees that the strips should fit snugly in place without the need for any force. However, some clamping pressure is needed on the glue joint to ensure a good bond - there are various methods for applying this pressure, with certain trade-offs to each. Further, when working on complex shapes such as the stern, the necessary clamping pressure can knock strips out of alignment, so you typically need additional clamps and splints to ensure that proper alignment is maintained.

Right?
