I am more concerned with molecules than particles. I wear a resp for glassing and sometimes a resp for sanding big expanses of glass but often the more expensive dust masks for sanding.

Years back I had a fender bender fixed by some back yard body shop guys. The thing I learned from them is to blow the particles away from you with a large box fan. When I sand the big boat jobs (cedar or epoxy) I naturally have a vac on the sander exhausting outside the room. But I sacrifice the heat in my basement shop and open a window and have a box fan behind me blowing dust away from my face and a powerful exhaust fan, sucking it outside. The box fan gets moved with me as I move around. Why have particles in your face relying on a mask or resp to keep them out of your lungs when you can start right off by keeping them away from you. I have some space heaters going so I'm never uncomfortable. But for smaller sanding jobs, I just rely on the sander vac and a face mask.
