All dust particles are harmful. IMO sanded glass is as much of a threat as asbestos and I always wear a particulate mask
if I am creating a visible amount of dust when sanding down.

I basically don't use any sanding tool that does not have dust collection. I have even purchased hand sanding blocks with dust collection. The only sanding tools I don't have dust collection on are the really specialty sanding blocks such as the coaming sanding blocks below.

But even with very good dust collection, I still wear a dust respirator (same mask as my organic, but different filter) whether or not I can see dust.
