started to wipe down with lacquer thinner..
Lacquer thinner dissolved the varnish!
Don't go for the harshest solvents first.
Water is a solvent.
Now go over your surfaces with steel wool and alcohol to remove the old compromised varnish.
Then wet sand with 220 wet/dry sandpaper and water until the sandpaper does not clog with old varnish.
Wet sand between coats with 220 only. Wipe clean with water and a sponge.
You can use a tack cloth light to remove dust before varnishing.
