I take a strip and put a small angle on the edge with my plane. Then I would put a metal ruler on it and with a utility knife slice off a thin piece that would now have a "V" shape to it. And you can sand it thinner if needed too. That I would press into any bad joint and it would be invisible when done. It doesn't have to go all the way in. Its a cosmetic fix. Use your normal water woodworking glue *just a tiny touch of it)

BTW- that's how you repair a split or fissure in a guitar or violin. Good repair people will match the wood and spend and hour making that patch fit perfectly.

Great tip on cutting the patch! Why do you say "used to?"
