Another opinion,

I know everyone says to not use wood fillers, but it does work for tiny sliver holes between strips. I've use Elmer's tinted wood filler which is water based and takes stain well. I try to match the color to the wood, they don't have red cedar but their red oak is a close match. I prefer wood glued in, even better is no gaps to start with, but the wood filler can and does work.
