I have some nice OLD 2x4x12' through 19' red cedar boards, around 40 years old, that were the structure of a shelving system. The boards have a deep red color that I would like to use in my current build. How would you slice them up? I would like to use my 10" table saw. The wood surface is fair but will need to be cleaned up a bit. Although I have a planner and a jointer it would be a pain to mill, I'm thinking to run them flat through table saw to clean up edges then vertical to clean up faces. Would you cut them into 3/8" by 1.5" blanks, then 3/8" X 5/8" strips or 3/8" X 3.5" blanks, then strips ? There are some knots and screw holes I will need to work around, current plan is to get wood to strips then cut out any bad areas and scarf back together. How do you feel about horizontal vs vertical scarfs on strips? Seems horizontal will be less visible, no vertical line on strip? One more question, any feed back on using ca glue to scarf strips?
