I just realized Steve might take this as a slam - it wasn't - its entirely separate from the facts of the previous discussion for me.

No slam taken - I absolutely agree with you on this, that's the challenge, to distinguish the wheat from the chaff without shutting down the conversation.

The question, though, is if the forum is meant to be totally about "the facts." I assumed not, that it was about "conversations" as per the top banner, (i.e., "An open discussion board for conversations about designing, building and paddling small craft") but I now see that the forum-specific banner reads "Find advice on all aspects of building your own kayak, canoe or any lightweight boats." So if the mandate for this forum is solely to "find advice," then I apologize - I've been off-topic all along.
