You ask, "how many times can you read the same newbie questions . . . " I will go back to my teacher / classroom anology - every year that teacher gets a new class to teach the same subject and hears the same questions. She/he is a teacher, thats what they do.

Well, teachers do that because they get paid. As far as I know, Nick, Rob, Et, Marc, etc., aren't getting paid for participating here. That's why I wasn't thinking of it as a "school" where my responsibility is to sit in my chair and be quiet, but rather as a "community" where if I took a penny, then I should give a penny.

But that's fine - I appreciate hearing your point of view on this, and I'm not saying you're wrong, I think the people who have been here longer than me have the right to decide what sort of culture they want.

This is one of those threads that is going nowhere and has the potential of exploding so I am finished with it.

I don't really understand that response. I posted something that you found compelling enough to respond to. I had shared my opinion, you shared yours. Nobody's arguing or calling anybody names (except for that guy John). You might even say we're having a conversation! Nobody's being forced to participate - those who want to post can, those who don't want to don't have to, and it's a threaded forum so those who don't care are free to skip the whole thing.

Why is that a bad thing?

A forum is open to any and all participants, unless they violate the rules enough.

I suggest you not sit quiet. I suggest you post any question, sermon, design, trip or anything related to Kayaking.
Occasionally people go beyond that because they know there are a set of skills which might help them.

The only arbiter on this forum is Nick Schade and he graciously allows most anything even if we are not quite well behaved children.

You can listen or not. I agree with several people who said one of the strengths of a good forum is the possibility that an unusual idea can be proven to the benefit of us all.
Personally, I really detest the idea that anyone has to follow the "wisdom" of an old clique.
For me, I'm a recently retired engineer and I will always be looking for the reasons (or facts) which make a suggestion work - or not.

I have had my own "pet project" which I presented here. After a couple of questions there was resounding silence.
That's how you can tell if you have an interested audience.

Welcome to the forum. I'll be working very hard not to argue with you.
