Do you think you would do better if you waited for the clear to harden between each coat?
I was surprised you put 3 coats on one after another.

Absolutely waiting for one coat to set up (I'm going to loosely use the term "gel") then apply successive coats is probably the way to go. I just wanted to do an initial test, and applying coats immediately on top of each other was test #1. It was deceiving because when it cured and I checked the mil thickness it was no where near what can be achieved when spraying with a gun.
