Sorry, but no.
spindle
ˈspɪnd(ə)
noun
1.
a slender rounded rod with tapered ends used in hand spinning to twist and wind thread from a mass of wool or flax held on a distaff.
2.
a rod or pin serving as an axis that revolves or on which something revolves.
So, the essence of spindle is that its an oblong rotating object. There is nothing about spindle (or its definition) that would sugest it has 3-dimentional lattice structure.
Furthermore....
upon more investigation on this forum, the term has been applied for the first time by Mr. Brian Scarborough on 2/11/2011 in this message:
http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/index.cgi/md/read/id/200846/sbj/strip-leveling-yost-style-strongback/
Then it has been picked up by Mr. Kudzu who repeated it often enough (to market his Kudzucraft business) until it passed to the general public as a legitimate term
Google search confirms the term going no further back than 2011, and propagated primarily by Mr. Kudzu.
Why do I bother with this whole business? Because there is no need to invent a new world where one sufficient enought already exists. In the mental health field this process is called neologism.
