Strip: great auk end forms

PLEASE HELP
My 14 year old son and I are attempting to build the Great Auk from the book. We need tomake it 14 ft for his small size and the rivers here in Michign. After reading the section in the back about altering the design several times I'm still confused by the formula listed. Am I just over thinking this?
