Bill, and anyone else with experience of combined Dacron and glass covering of SOF kayaks:
Which combination of Dacron and glass gives the best resistance to impacts and abrasions? Let's say for a total of about 8oz cloth you could have 2oz, 4 oz and 6 oz glass over 6 oz, 4 oz and 2 oz Dacron respectively (not exactly what is available, but roughly). Does the stiffness and resistance come mostly from the Dacron or the glass? The fact that you use glass as a second layer suggests that the heat-shrunk Dacron is mostly to provide a relatively pressure-resistant surface to apply the glass to, and the glass provides most of the strength. If that is true, the thinnest Dacron possible would seem to be the way to go, if it shrinks enough and is resistant enough to lay and saturate the glass over it. Does Dacron need less or more epoxy per unit weight than fibreglass? Please enlighten me. Thanks.
