Get a copy of HC Peterson's Instruction in Kayak Building. It's out of print as far as I know, and I am just going to risk being eaten alive, to say I happen to have a copy of it in PDF that was passed to me un-asked for, which I would share so you and your daughter can learn the skill. You may also find it more legitimately through your library or a library loan. God I hope I don't get in trouble for revealing that, but it is a classic text well worth reading for anyone undertaking a build. Cunningham makes it more of a sure thing with the jigs, but Peterson teaches the art of it, more freehand.

Building a SOF is not hard, particularly if you have easy access to quality wood and the tools to mill it down. Building one that fits you like a glove and paddles sweet is hard, relatively.

You can also learn a lot by studying Harvey's build pics a the site Mike linked. Look for the east greenland, where he talks about stanchioning out the keelson and bending the ribs in under it.

I supervised and guided a high school senior in making a Yost fuselage-style (asbestos on) kayak for his senior project. He didn't get it skinned, but still got an A for the frame.
