I've never had that issue with polyurethane varnish over polyester or Nylon. Perhaps it's because I oiled the frames (boiled linseed oil) before skinning them. If you're adding pigment, it will tend to disguise any uneven areas. I use artist's oil paints to tint the varnish, since they work great, are easy to find and come in a wide variety of colors. A small amount goes a long way.
