Your Defthane seems like a good product.

99% of varnishes these days are polyurethanes which means that synthetic compounds are use in the making of it vs. natural varnish that uses natural ingredients (from pine trees etc). Like Epiphanes varnish who also sells polys as well. Polys were invented to take the beating of floors use. That's why most varnishes are called polyurethane varnish. Just make sure whatever you use, its for exterior use.

As Brian stated, the easiest tinting agent is just artist oil paint, easily available at art stores, craft stores etc.
