The way the latch works is the push button has a shaft under it that goes into a spring. On the side of the shaft is an arm that hooks up towards the button on the end of the arm. The inside of the male end of the shaft has a flange that goes in so it makes a lip inside the shaft for the hook on the button to engage with which keeps the paddle from being able to slide apart. The teeth you can see in the picture mesh with another set of teeth inside the female shaft which holds the paddle at the feather you set it at. I think I would just melt wax over the button to fill the gaps around the button and glass over the top and then carefully cut out the glass over the button. You may be able to push the button in far enough to lodge it below the surface of the shaft or even remove the spring if you fiddle with it.
