I just read your original post again. Look inside the shaft and you should see a spring around the vertical shaft below the button. If the spring is missing it shouldn't be hard to find a similar sized spring. Loo at the vertical shaft below the button and see it there is an arm with a little hook on the end. If that was broken off you will need to get creative. If both the spring and the arm with the hook are intact try putting a hose clamp on the female end and tighten it up enough to to close the crack and see if the button will catch the other shaft. If you can't get it to work you could repair as suggested above and engage both shafts and drill 2 or 3 holes through both shafts and use the more traditional button inside the male shaft.
