I do find tack cloths helpful prior to varnish. They can pick up the last specks of dust that got past a thorough vacuuming and water or mineral spirit wipe down. I've never had any problem with tack cloth residue messing with varnish or oil based paint. Just don't use them prior to epoxy coats.
