I'd like to hear a good argument against deck lines and good end toggles, aside from the cosmetic one.

Simple. I sea kayaked before the British invasion.

In white water we learned simpler was better and strings or ropes could be a death trap.

I and my friends did self rescues just fine without deck lines. Wet-exit hold on to the cockpit coaming and paddle, PEROID. Teach that!

If not grab the coaming throw and arm over the deck and or near the stems or grab the toggle handles.

I've thought about deck lines. I can't see grabbing for a thin tiny line grab the boat. We never found a problem with grabbing the boat. For an assisted rescue, throw you body over the deck of the other boat with paddle across both boats to stabilize both.

I've learned things break under the most stressful conditions. Will your deck lines break when you need them? What if you go to rescue someone and their lines break? The broken lines could pose a hazard. What if you don't know how to do a rescue or self rescue without deck lines. THEN you will really be in deep sh--.

You should be practicing doing rescues without deck lines just in case.

Do often do you test and replace deck lines? Are the plastic fittings holding the deck lines ready to break from UV exposure?

Are recessed fittings holding water and breaking down line strength?

In cold water can you use your fingers to grab and hold deck lines. Would someone with hypothermia find deck lines useful?

In winter can you grab deck lines wearing gloves or pogies?

Just a few things which come to mind, so no I'm not sold on deck lines.

The choice is yours.
