Epoxy: Behlen's Solar Lux

Hi all,
I'm stripping a kayak in cherry and plan to use Behlen's Solar Lux cherry to even out the tone a bit.
Because of space limitations, spraying isn't in the cards.
My experience with the product is that it's INTENSE, and dries quickly- too quickly- especially when dealing with a large project, like a kayak. The last time I used it under similar circumstances I flooded the beejeezus out of the item so streaks were simply not an issue.
I'm planning to dilute the dye with denatured alcohol to gain some control over the build of color (again, my intent is to even out tone, not necessarily to go much darker), but expect this will help avoid streaking/lapping. Behlen's also offers a retarder.
Any concerns over compatibility between the retarder and epoxy? Is it even worth while if I'll be diluting things considerably in the first place? Any other stain tips?
I've seen Nick's staining video, but there's not much out there I could find that addresses the particular concerns of the wood kayak builder.
Thanks,
Patrick
