Definitely - that's why I was thinking the commercial boats aren't necessarily good examples, because I THINK they're using the same line for both, so they're working against a different set of requirements regarding the "ideal path."
Any commercial boat that's advertising elastic shock cor as 'deck safety line' would get crossed off my list quite quickly. Pictures are seldom clear enough to show the situation - lots of commercial boats have deck lines in solid colors that match the shock cords.
Any recommendation on rope, btw? Would 1/4" Sta-Set (2500 lb breaking capacity, 89 cents a foot) be ok, or better to upgrade to a fancier fiber like New England Ropes HD-75 with a 9700 lb strength at $1.29/foot? Seems like hand feel is as important as breaking strength - is 1/4" too small for grabbing?
Sta-set would be fine for me. I've been using Samson Trophy braid, both 3/16" and 1/4". 3/16 is standard on the NDK boats, and will be plenty strong enough. I definitely wouldn't use anything larger than 1/4". If you want 'easier to grab' then putting the line in a tube or elevating it off the deck with 'beads' of some kind would work better than going to a thicker line, IMO.
Some of the hi-tech lines don't hold knots well - another argument for saving your money on line.
On the Panthera, I wanted separate lines for the deck compass ( which attaches with bungees), so I used thin spectra (Q-PowerLine) rudder line inside tubes. That stuff is great for thin strong gear loops as well - it has a waxy surface that holds knots very well. 600# test- it's used for kite boarding sails.
