Whatever filler I use, I find that it needs to be fairly 'thin' to penetrate small cracks and defects. The wood will absorb epoxy or water and dry out the filler as you apply it.
So, some experiments with filler consistency might be a good idea.
With any filler, you'll be spending time pushing air out of the cracks -that's the big advantage of using wood slivers instead of filler, as mentioned earlier.
