Salt water or fresh? Salt is a big annoyance with any sliding cable and hot water is good to flush out the cable.
For me, I would just shoot down some WD-40. Oil does better where salt is the culprit. If you're a fresh water paddler then silicone would be fine. There's no scientifically perfect lubricant.
